Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
